ENCHODUS-FISH TEETH

FOSSIL FISH FANG

MOROCCO

Enchodus sp. is an extinct genus of predatory fish that thrived during the Cretaceous Period, 100 to 66 million years ago. These teeth were located at the front of both the upper and lower jaws of the fish, leading to the nickname of "The Saber-tooth Herring", even though this is scientifically incorrect. The fangs of these fish have been documented up to 2.4 inches long, with the fish growing up to 5 feet in length. However, many species of this genus only grew a few inches long in total body length. Even though these fish possessed a daunting appearance, they have been found in the stomach contents of large predators such as sharks, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs. Fossils from these creatures have been found all over the world but are most commonly excavated in Morocco.
